The Safety Officer will have primary oversight of the facility-wide patient safety program. This leadership role will direct others within the facility towards process improvements that will support the reduction of medical/health care errors and other factors that contribute to unintended adverse patient outcomes. This individual provides leadership for safety assessments, coordinates the activities of the patient safety function or committee, educates other practitioners on the system-based cause for medical errors, consults with management and staff, and communicates literature-based ideas regarding effective patient safety strategies to others within the organization. Key responsibilities of this position also include working with all services to hardwire reliable delivery of healthcare systems that incorporate best practice patient safety methodologies. To identify, assess and control environmental hazards at SPEMC Facilities for in?patients, visitors, and personnel through the implementation of a network?wide safety management program and through the research, development and update of safety policies and procedures, consultation with administration, department supervisors and staff, in?service education, investigation of accidents and incidents, and regulatory compliance under the direction of the network's Safety Committee. To ensure the network's compliance with safety management and other environment of care functions as defined by JCAHO, CARF, Medicate, OSHA, EPA, FDA, TDH and other regulatory agencies.
Bachelorï¿½s degree or relevant work experience
Certified Health care safety professional (CHSP).
Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and National certification as industrial safety professional (CSP) required within 6 months of hire.
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
3-5 Years experience in an acute health care as Security/ Safety officer.
1 year experience in upper management in supervising or background on safety emergency management.
Principles of health care safety management; Life Safety Code compliance (NFPA); Occupational safety requirements of JCAHO, OSHA, NIOSH and other regulatory agencies; general accident prevention and control theory and practice; Organization and management in health care settings; Principles of Industrial Hygiene; Adult education principles; Supervision and evaluation of personnel; excellent interpersonal skills; well organized and able to prioritize tasks; creative, self?motivated, innovative; ability to communication effectively with personnel at varying educational levels.
