This position is located within the Environmental Management Service's Textile Care division at the Sioux Falls VA Health Care System. Incumbent must be able to perform all laundry/linen section activities. The assignments will change depending upon laundry needs and will occasionally require working in other sections of the Textile Care division to include the wash room, distribution and seamstress' clothing room. Incumbent performs a wide range of textile care duties including the following: Operates and maintains ironer/cross-folder, 50 lb. washers, 100 and 200 lb. dryers, single piece folder and steam finishing tunnel by selecting the proper preset cycles and keeping the equipment clean and line traps emptied. Sorts soiled (all considered hazardous/contagious/contaminated by "Standard Precautions" protocol, per OSHA regulation) and clean textiles according to linen type, use and manufacturer's recommendations. Folds all types of textiles. Loads all types of carts. Cleans work areas. Recognizes and notifies supervisor of all current and potential malfunctions and/or breakdowns of required equipment. Recognizes and notifies supervisor of supplies and/or materials in low supply. Assists in minor machinery adjustments and preventative maintenance of equipment. Selects and uses chemicals to clean a wide variety of surfaces per industry standards and manufacturer's recommendations. Reads, comprehends and/or interprets written and verbal instruction and/or communication from various avenues. Notifies supervisor about needed supplies, materials and equipment in need as well as deficiencies and/or potential deficiencies in the physical building(s), utilities and other potentially-harmful safety conditions. Assists with training of new Textile Care employees. Participates in personal and organizational assessments and personal development programs including the performance review process. May periodically be required to assist with Housekeeping Aid duties. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 6:00 am to 2:30 pm Position Description Title/PD#: Laundry Worker/PD03306A Physical Requirements: Incumbent must be able to perform moderate to heavy physical effort over an eight-hour period of time including continuous standing, bending, lifting and climbing. Sustained physical activity involves turning, stooping, crouching, pushing, rubbing and reaching. Objects weighing as much as fifty (50) pounds must be lifted or moved. Work is normally performed in a clean, well-lit, heated and ventilated building. He/she is exposed to noise, vibrations and other potential physical harm from operating power equipment and tools. He/she must use PPE appropriately as they are subject to skin irritation and respiratory symptoms from chemical cleaning solutions. He/she is routinely exposed to disagreeable odors such as feces, vomit, and blood, etc. He/she is also routinely exposed to BBP/OIM, MDROs, contagious diseases and other infectious organisms that can cause physical harm and/or death (if PPE is not used appropriately or is defective). He/she is exposed to potential injury and contamination from sharps, needles, etc. He/she is exposed to predatory pests such as bed bugs, lice and scabies.
