The Food Service Worker (Materials Handler) position is located in the Nutrition and Food Services (NFS) at the Lebanon VA Medical Center in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. The primary duties of this position are related to material handling of food including food ordering, inventory management and preparation and service. Receiving and Storage: Incumbent serves as a lead in the Ingredient Control Unit (ICU). Provides oversight and guidance to peer in ICU. Oversees and ensures ordering request made by Food Service Workers (FSW) in the main kitchen and outlying kitchen(s) are within established parameters and meet fiscal responsibility. As a food service worker with material handler's duties, incumbent orders, receives, stores, rotates, and stamp dates provisions and other supplies procured by Nutrition and Food Services (NFS). Reports to Supervisors those items not received and possible menu substitutions. When items are not available from approved contract sources, completes Food and Beverage Requests and forwards for approval before using purchase card to purchase required patient food and supplies. Inventory Control: Inventory control entails maintaining a perpetual inventory and taking a physical inventory at least quarterly. The supervisor is informed when we have an over or under supply of food or supplies in stock. Also, food which many not be served before its expiration date should be reported. Observes first-in first-out (FIFO) and reviews expiration date when pulling products. Responsible for exploring alternative food items and supplies available via Prime Vendor and/or another approved vendor(s). Ability to follow oral and written instruction and to organize work independently without supervisory review to meet production schedules. Preparation: Maintains a thorough working knowledge of methods and procedures needed in small and large quantity food preparation. Knows how to read and understand written food service materials. Has the ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations using decimals, fractions and percentages needed in multiplying ingredients in a recipe, calculating the number of servings needed or the number of serving a container will hold. Knows the various tables of weights and measures and how to convert from U.S. standards to metric system. Performs other related duties as assigned.
