The incumbent is assigned to the sorting or finish area of the consolidated Medical Center Laundry, within the Facilities Management Service at VA Portland Health Care System (VAPORHCS), Oregon, with duty in Vancouver, Washington. The incumbent's primary assignment consists of sorting general Medical Center soiled linens, patient clothing and surgical linen, feeding various sizes of flatwork linen into the flatwork ironer, stack folded flatwork, fold roughdry items, check flatwork and rough-dry, linens for rewash or repair. Incumbent must also keep records of items being processed, including soiled linen cart weight, clean linen shipped, and full linen cart weight. Incumbent is required to keep equipment and work area clean and free of hazards and debris. The incumbent may perform other duties under the direction of the Textile Care Manager; however, instructions controlling the work performed originate with the Laundry Work Leader. The Laundry Manger will evaluate this position with input from the working Leader in that area. The incumbent assigned to this position is required to have a thorough knowledge of equipment used in both the soiled sort and finish area of the laundry. Employee must know operation of the flatwork ironing systems, small and large piece folders, tunnel finishing system, clean monorail system, gas and steam dryers, small piece washer pass through washer, Continuous Batch Washer (CBW), operation of soiled product conveyer, soiled monorail system, and be familiar with the use and transfer of wash chemicals. Employee will also need working knowledge on the care and processing of patient transfer devices. Employee must be familiar with station policies and service procedures that effect the overall operation. Employee must be familiar with the proper use of germicidal agent for daily cleaning of work area to include fogging of trailer after unload. Employee must understand Infection Control requirements for bio hazardous areas. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 6:00 a.m.- 2:30 p.m. Position Description Title/PD#: Laundry Worker/PD20814A and PD206550 Physical Requirements: Duties required include frequently maneuvering heavy carts of soiled and clean linens, maneuvering slings of soiled and clean linens on overhead monorail system, standing for long periods of time, pushing and pulling heavy carts on and off trailer/truck. Soiled linens trucks can way upwards of 600 pounds clean linen trucks can weigh upwards of 900 depending on product, exposing workers to possible muscle strain. Position requires some heavy lifting, pulling, pushing, bending, stooping, standing and walking continuously on cement surface as well as working in an area around moving machinery. Design of most of the processing equipment is ergonomically correct, however the employee will be required to work at or above shoulder level when maneuvering soiled/ clean linen on over head rail system, and when loading textiles into shipping carts, pr storing on shelving.
