The WG-2 Food Service Worker (FSW) works in the Nutrition & Food Service Kitchen and is assigned to the Food Production, Food Assembly, Food Delivery, Dish-room areas of the Bay Pines Nutrition and Food Services. The Employee performs tasks with several steps or a sequence of tasks that require attention to work operations. This is an Open and Continuous Vacancy Announcement. This position works in the Food Service and Food Production areas for the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System-VA Medical Center Nutrition & Food Service (N&FS) and performs duties under direct supervision of a Food Service Supervisor. A trained Food Service Worker of a higher grade may give directions on a day-to-day basis. Receives formal classes and on-the-job training in basic skills such as safety, sanitation, cor­rect food handling techniques, basic modified diets, operation, maintenance and cleaning of selected equipment, and other related subjects, including a steam table. Supervisor is available for assistance, guidance and information. The overall responsibilities of the Food Service Worker include but are not limited to: Delivers food trays to patients' bedside from an enclosed food tray delivery cart according to ward, room, bed, and patient's name, as indicated on the individual patient meal ticket. Follows correct Isolation meal delivery and retrieval procedures. Delivers food to patients in a dining room environment setting. Retrieves soiled trays from patients bedside and dining room. Places trays into delivery cart. Return full cart to dish washing unit. Follows the menu and established guidelines to accurately portion and serve prepared hot and cold food and beverages on the cafeteria tray line/ kitchen tray line/steam tables/dining room tables. Delivers individual and/or bulk between-meal feedings to patients' bedside or designated area according to ward, room bed, and patient's name, as indicated by the computer generated label and reports. Correctly performs dining room service in the CLC and Dom as assigned. Serves residents and patients utilizing select meal service. Portions cold foods, such as salads and desserts, and places in correct dish, plate or bowl according to given guides such as food counts and menus. Assembles and wraps hamburgers, cheeseburgers, and grilled cheese sandwiches, according to instructions. Assists with assembling food trays on tray line in positions requiring a minimal knowledge of modified diets, such as starter, cold food, loader, expeditor and beverage positions. Works various positions in dish room such as taking clean dishes from mechanical dish machine and correctly placing in proper clean-dish dispenser. Able to set up, clean, and operate mechanical warewashing machines and mechanical cart wash machine. Assists in pot and pan unit, which includes correct operation, maintenance and cleaning of mechanical utensil washing machine. Scrapes, soaks, scours, and scrubs all cooking utensils, including heavier mixing bowls. Performs special cleaning tasks on selected pieces of food service equipment and/or area, as assigned, including cleaning, moving equipment and washing floors and walls with appropriate equipment. Cleans and sanitizes food service work areas, equipment, trayline, and dining room tables in the assigned areas using correct cleaning agents and procedures. May perform tasks such as taking cans of food out of boxes and placing on correct shelf, bagging bread, cookies, cheese, etc., according to oral instructions. Unloads supply carts and moves heavy garbage cans when collecting and transferring trash from the work area. Unloads food from delivery trucks . Performs other duties as assigned, including those for emergency situations Work Schedule: This position may involve rotating shiftwork and/or irregular tours of duty to include evenings, weekends and holidays. Position Description Title/PD#: Food Service Worker/PD04633A Physical Requirements: Incumbent must able to stand and/or walk for majority of duty time. Able to bend, stoop, reach, push, pull, and twist frequently. Able to lift trays of salads or other cold food such as cases of milk, cartons of fresh produce or canned food weighing up to 40 pounds and carry such weights short distances. Able to push heavy-duty, portable kitchen equipment such as dish dispensers or enclosed tray delivery carts weighing in excess of 800 pounds when truck is full loaded. Able to scour and scrub large sized cooking utensils and equipment. Working Conditions: Incumbent is responsible for following defined safety rules to avoid hazards associated with the operation and cleaning of steam, gas and electrical equipment used in N&FS. Work is performed in areas where temperatures are either excessively hot and/or humid, such as dish room or pot and pan clean up unit; or extremely cold, such as walk-in refrigerators or walk-in freezers. Subject to cuts, burns, and bruises when working in food processing, food production, and food service or clean up areas. Must exercise care to prevent personal injury when pushing heavy-duty mobile kitchen equipment or walking on wet, slippery floors. Work area is usually noisy.
