General Summary
The Sourcing Manager - Economic Mobility will advance Duke?s economic mobility commitment by expanding local supplier participation and developing competitive sourcing opportunities. This role is responsible for directing new spend into Durham and Triangle businesses to create measurable community impact while ensuring all procurement meets Duke?s rigorous standards for value, service, and compliance.
As a strategic bridge between the University and the Health System, this leader helps translate institutional commitment into tangible results by building trusted local supplier relationships and managing a disciplined opportunity pipeline. The ideal candidate should be commercially grounded, community-oriented, analytical, and capable of building a credible and sustainable supplier development pipeline that supports Duke?s broader economic mobility commitments.
Work Performed
Local Supplier Development & Community Engagement
Identify, engage, and qualify local suppliers in Durham and across the Triangle region.
Act as a visible ambassador for Duke Supply Chain with local businesses, chambers of commerce, and partner organizations.
Strategically expand Duke?s local supplier ecosystem in alignment with established economic mobility goals.
Opportunity Pipeline & Sourcing Execution
Analyze Duke?s enterprise-wide spend to identify categories suitable for local supplier participation.
Build and maintain a robust pipeline of sourcing opportunities tied to the economic mobility strategy.
Coordinate sourcing and bidding events through the Supply Chain / LogicSource operating model.
Stakeholder Partnership & Award Support
Partner with category leaders, operations, and business stakeholders to prioritize local sourcing opportunities.
Provide stakeholders with clear sourcing results, supplier insights, and data-driven award recommendations.
Balance community impact goals with quality, service, risk, and total value requirements.
Program Governance, Reporting & Credibility
Maintain disciplined tracking of supplier outreach, bid activity, awards, and realized spend impact.
Prepare regular progress reports for Duke leadership regarding economic mobility commitments.
Establish the governance, process discipline, and transparency necessary to make the program sustainable and credible.
Measures of Success
Spend Impact: Volume of new spend directed to Durham and Triangle suppliers vs. plan.
Pipeline Growth: Increase in the number and quality of qualified local suppliers.
Operational Execution: Number of sourcing events completed and the conversion rate of opportunities to awards.
Program Integrity: Stakeholder confidence in program speed and transparency; reporting accuracy and cadence.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Relationship Management: Ability to engage community partners with credibility, professionalism, and warmth.
Commercial Acumen: Strong understanding of sourcing fundamentals and the ability to convert ideas into disciplined execution.
Analytical Thinking: Proficiency in using spend insights and market intelligence to move opportunities forward.
Collaborative Influence: Proven ability to work effectively across University and Health System stakeholders without relying on formal authority.
Market Fluency: Deep understanding of the Durham and Triangle supplier landscape.
Data Discipline: Ability to translate complex activity into measurable progress and leadership-ready reporting.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Bachelor?s degree in Business, Supply Chain, Economics, or a related field required.
Experience
5+ years of experience in sourcing, supplier diversity, community economic development, or supplier engagement.
Proven track record of building new supplier relationships and converting them into documented business outcomes.
Experience operating independently in a highly visible, mission-oriented role.
Experience with Request for Proposals (RFP) and contract draft review is strongly preferred.
Degrees, Licensures, Certifications
Professional certification in Supply Chain (e.g., CPSM, CPM) is a plus but not required.
Essential Physical Job Functions
Must be able to travel locally within the Durham and Triangle area for community engagement and vendor outreach.
